10,000 traditional Catholics appeal to the Pope not to water down Summorum Pontificum

My first ever blog post, four years ago, reported that Catholic traditionalists were worried by the non-appearance of a Motu Proprio removing restrictions on the celebration of the Tridentine Mass. But they had no need to worry – or so it seemed. Summorum Pontificum restored to priests and groups of the faithful the freedom to celebrate the older form of the Roman Rite without interference from hostile bishops.
As most of you will be aware, the question isn’t as settled as we thought. The enemies of Summorum Pontificum are reported to have prepared an “instruction” that undermines the Motu Proprio. We don’t know the details, but when a blog as influential as the New Liturgical Movement encourages Catholics to sign a petition to the Holy Father asking him not to allow such changes then I think there’s cause for alarm.
So far, 10,000 Catholics have signed. You may may find it hard to believe that Pope Benedict would take back something that he has solemnly granted. But the opponents of the Extraordinary Form are a determined bunch and – especially in the case of conservative supporters of the “reform of the reform” – extremely powerful in the curia. It wouldn’t be the first time a Pope has had his arm twisted. Here, again, is the link to the petition.

Summorum Pontificum Under Attack

"Reports from different sources suggest that ill-intentioned people within the highest ranks of the Holy See wish to use the clarification document on Summorum Pontificum as a Trojan Horse, emptying the motu proprio of all its content, especially regarding Parish Priests and other members of the diocesan clergy (see e.g. Messa in Latino). This is a dangerous, clear, and credible threat. We must pray, indeed, but all priests and lay faithful must act. All Catholic faithful must send urgent and respectful letters to the Holy Father, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Secretariat of State, the Pontifical Commission 'Ecclesia Dei', and other authorities, asking the Holy Father and curial authorities to defend the clear letter of the motu proprio that gave us freedom and thanking once again the Holy Father for the gift that was Summorum Pontificum, including references to the personal improvement brought to one's Catholic life and family by the wider availability of the Traditional liturgy.  "

The Restoration Project Continued...

Two years after Pope Benedict XVI issued Summorum Pontificum, giving every priest the right to say Holy Mass according to the Usus Antiquior (1962 Missal) Georgetown University's Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate surveyed Catholics in America.  What they found is only a small group of Catholics oppose the Latin Mass (12%).  Why any Catholic would oppose the opportunity for others to worship in a more spiritually rewarding and externally revernent manner is not known at this time.  Of those Catholics who actually attend weekly Mass, 45% would attend the Usus Antiquior if offered at a convenient time and location.

Restoration Project Virginia

Nearly 1 in 5 Diocese of Arlington Churches offer TLM ...

"A newly added Mass will begin this Sunday in the Diocese of Arlington (Va.). Saint Anthony (mission church of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary) in King George, Va., will have Mass each Sunday at 12:45 p.m. This brings the total to 12 churches (plus Christendom College’s chapel) with regularly scheduled TLMs in the Diocese of Arlington, which has a total of 68 parishes, or nearly 20 percent of diocesan parishes."

This example proves that, even under the thumb of a bishop historically hostile to tradition, holy priests determined to bring about true restoration of the Mass and Faith can be successful.
